Plyo boxes are one of the few pieces of kit where the soft version is the better commercial buy, not the cheaper compromise. A missed jump onto a timber or steel box takes skin off a shin and can end a session. A missed jump onto a soft box is a bruise and a laugh, which means members keep attempting the movement instead of avoiding it.
The range
-
3 in 1 soft plyo box: one unit that gives three heights depending on which face it is stood on. The efficient choice where floor space is tight, because a single box covers a whole class of abilities.
-
Plyo box set, 3 piece: 15cm, 30cm and 45cm boxes for graded progression and for step-ups, hip thrust support and seated work as well as jumping.
How they get used
Box jumps are the obvious application, but in practice a commercial gym gets more use out of step-ups, split squats, box squats, elevated press-ups, depth drops and as a bench substitute for hip thrusts. The lower heights in the set earn their place through mobility and rehab work long before anyone jumps on them.
Specifying for a class
Order enough that a circuit does not bottleneck at the box station, and favour a spread of heights over several of the same: a class of mixed ability needs a 15cm option far more often than it needs a fourth 45cm. See also slam and wall balls, battle ropes and the full functional fitness range.
