A weighted bag does things a barbell cannot. It is unstable, awkward to hold and forgiving when it lands, which makes it the right tool for carries, cleans and floor work with members who are not ready for a loaded bar, or in spaces where dropping a bar is not an option.
What to look for
-
Handles. Multiple nylon handles placed around the bag allow for varied exercises and training angles, and mean two people can use the same bag differently.
-
Construction. Heavy duty material with reinforced stitching, because these are dropped repeatedly by design.
-
Filling. A secure fill keeps the weight distribution consistent rather than shifting to one end mid set.
Storage
Weighted bags are bulky and do not stack. A five bag rack keeps them upright and out of the walkway, which in a functional zone is the difference between usable floor and an obstacle course.
Buying for a functional area
Bags get used most in the middle of the weight range, in classes and inductions, so weight your order there and add heavier bags as single units. See also functional fitness and kettlebells.
