Plates are bought once and lived with for years, so the decision that matters is what happens when they hit the floor. Cast iron chips, cracks the floor and gets loud. Rubber and urethane absorb the drop, protect the surface underneath and keep the noise down — which is why almost every commercial specification now starts there.
Urethane discs, 1.25kg to 25kg
The premium option. Urethane resists tearing, gouging and fading far better than rubber, so the plates keep their finish and their markings stay readable for the life of the gym. Available individually, and as a 200kg Olympic urethane set for kitting out a platform in one go. Altrafit ELEMENTS Olympic discs cover the same 1.25kg–25kg range at a sharper price point.
Bumper plates, 5kg to 25kg
-
Colour-coded rubber bumper plates — grey 5kg, green 10kg, yellow 15kg, blue 20kg and red 25kg. Colour coding is not decoration: it lets a coach check a loaded bar across the room and lets members load correctly without reading every plate.
-
Black rubber bumper plates — the same weights in a uniform finish, for a more restrained look or where budget is tighter.
All bumper plates share a standard diameter, so a loaded bar sits at the correct height from the floor regardless of the weight on it — which matters for deadlift and Olympic lifting technique.
Storage
Olympic disc racks and bumper plate storage keep plates sorted by weight and off the floor, and a dedicated studio rack handles 10kg pump discs. See also barbells and bars.
